I recently got a pipe and was wondering if you have any recommendations for pipe tobacco?

I recommend not smoking because it is bad for you, but if you’re gonna, I really like Lane’s “1Q” blend. As far as tinned tobacco goes, Dunhill’s stuff is good, especially their “breakfast blend” (or whatever it’s called, it’s something like that but I can’t remember the exact name).

Have you considered selling Worry Hats in your store? I know I would buy one; I tend to worry too much. :(

We’ve been looking for a supplier for a while, once we find one they’ll be on sale.

How’d you come up with the name Questionable Content in the first place?

It just popped into my head one day. It was probably inspired by Something Positive.

Jeph, if your characters were real and you were part of their social circle, who do you think you would spend the most time with? Do you think you would be close friends with any of them in particular? (Assuming they didn’t know that you were their creator and overlord, of course)

I’d probably be super-buddies with Hannelore and Marigold, my real-life friends trend towards the nerdy end of the spectrum.

Any possibility of the entire cast getting anime’amafied as a print like the one from way back of the all the characters in the coffee shop?

It is on the extremely long list of things I should do at some point.

This has been bothering me for a few days: Why is Faye TIG welding without any safety gear other than the shield? At the very least she should have gloves and fireproof arm coverings (you can get nasty sunburns or real burns without them)

Do you Game, Make Deathmole Music, and Draw QC all on the same computer or do keep one sacred for “work”?

Music and comics are all done on my big ridiculous Mac Pro, but I have a dedicated PC for vidja gamez.

What’s your method for…How to best put this…Handling the effectively infinitely expanding nature of the comic? Do you just think of the current arc(or maybe even just the next day), or do you try to keep a big picture in your head? Is there even a big picture with an actual endpoint, or is it just a “It ends when I can’t take it anymore or die” thing?

I don’t think about it much! It pretty much takes care of itself, most of the time.

I’ve been wondering about this for awhile: did you choose to use Papyrus on the “Panda House” sign across the street from CoD just to torment those of us who have violent convulsions at the first sight of that horrible and overused typeface?

Nah, it’s just a commonly used font in signage around here (unfortunately).

I’m confused, do you like slipknot? a few years a go in the comic you bashed them, and then you tweeted this “WHY ISNT SLIPKNOT ON THIS LIST YOU SUCK” that confuses me.

Hey Jeph, I was so upset to hear you couldn’t make it to TCAF, I was hella looking forward to getting a chance to meet you and thank you in person for how awesome QC is. Do you have any idea when you’ll be able to come to another event / festival / convention / thing in Toronto? Hopefully you’ll be able to come by before next year’s TCAF. Thanks for being so awesome though!

Missing TCAF was a profound disappointment, I will do my best to not be sick for it next year.

Hi Jeph. I was wondering, you mention you being unable to sleep quite often (The dreaded sleep madness) and I wanted to know, does it ever affect the comic? Like do you write a script after not sleeping for while and it turns out freakin’ bizarre?

Not really, it just makes writing and drawing more unpleasant

It really depends- I always appreciate the sentiment when people bring me snacks at conventions, but I usually don’t have time to actually eat them.

Hey Jeph, I’m a relatively new reader (found you sometime last year from xkcd) and I’ve come to realise one of the main selling points of Questionable Content is the way in which is portrays people with mental disorders and depression in a realistic and understandable light. As a person who is attempting to write a character with cyclothymia, what advice do you have for portraying a character with such a disorder in a way that avoids representing them as a crazed lunatic?

Portray them as a person first and foremost. This applies to every kind of character!

I was thinking about saving up for a custom extended range guitar, and seeing your Siggery, I was wondering, how much did that set you back and how long did it take from first putting in the order to the date you received it?

I actually found that randomly on eBay for about $1800. I imagine his stuff is more expensive new. When it comes to custom guitars, the price really depends on what you’re ordering. $2000 is probably a good ballpark starting point, though. Order times can be anything from 3 months to multiple years depending on the maker and how backed up they are on work. My custom Creston took about six months, my custom Anderson took about 3 because they’re a much bigger shop.

Could you post pictures of your tattoos, and what they mean?

Current schedule is 1 per year although I’d really like to cut that down to every 6 months until I get caught up. Volume 3 will be out in September if everything goes according to plan.

Some time back, someone asked: “Your female charcaters have gotten more curvaceous as time goes on, have you ever had the urge to draw them in a more r-rated setting?” to which you replied “nope”. Though the recent sketch of Faye and Cat-Bread (bread-cat? or ???) would seem to imply a reconsideration, or was this a one-off just for the sake of it?

Tips for playing and recording an extended-range guitar:

1: Turn the gain down! Heavier strings get muddy if you’ve got too much distortion going. Listen to the guitars on a Meshuggah record- it’s crazy how little gain they actually use, most of the “heaviness” is in the instrument itself and the way they play.

2: Keep the mids! I’ve always been a fan of scooped-mid guitar tones, but if you do this with an ER guitar, it’s gonna sound like shit. They’ve just naturally got more midrange than a regular guitar (I think it’s the extra mass in the neck) and if you fight the guitar’s natural tone, it’s not gonna sound good. I still boost the bass and highs quite a bit, but I don’t dump the mids nearly as much as I do with regular guitars.

3: They’re different animals than regular guitars. 7-strings are fairly similar and you can use a lot of the same chords and voicings as with a 6-string, but 8-strings occupy this weird space between a regular guitar and an electric bass, and you have to use techniques from both instruments to get the most out of it. It’s also really easy to just constantly chug on those two low strings, but Meshuggah are way better at this than any of us will ever be so it’s best not to rely on it too heavily. Tosin Abasi from Animals As Leaders is really good at using the full range of his 8-string, even on his rhythm parts.

4: The heavier the strings, the better. I use the low A string from an electric bass as the low string on my 8. The low string on my 7 is a G bass string (insert tired “lol g-string” joke here). The tighter you can get those low strings, the better it’ll sound. That’s also why my Siggery has a fanned fretboard- the longer 28” scale on the bass side keeps low nots nice and tight while letting the standard guitar strings stay loose. It’s also surprisingly ergonomic.

5: Accept the fact that you will probably look stupid playing an ER instrument. Let’s face it, they’re kinda goofy looking. BUT THEY’RE SO FUN OH MAN

Not really a “dump,” just a couple quick questions. More of a QC poot, I guess.

Why couldn’t Station make a copy of himself, send it to a server in Hannelore’s apartment, and sync the two copies every time he’s overhead?

Station requires a vastly larger amount of storage and processing space compared to your average AI due to the whole “being a space station” thing. He wouldn’t fit on a server.

I listened to a really interesting interview on NPR about the effects of zero-g on astronauts who spend extended amounts of time in space stations. I was going to ask you about how Hanners adjusted to Earth gravity after spending almost her whole life in the Station, but then I went back and realized that they simulate gravity by spinning it, soo… I guess my questions are 1) Why do some areas in the Station not have simulated gravity and 2) is the gravity comparable to Earth’s? (I’m a dork.)

The central spindle of the station does not spin, allowing for work in zero-g. The outer hub spins at a rate high enough to simulate standard Earth gravity.

From the one shirt you’re featuring atm and some comments you’ve made, I assume that you’re a fan of Mass Effect. Have you played ME3, and if you’ve have what did you think of the ending? Also, what do you think about the insane amount of fan outrage (91% of 60,000 people in a poll on the Bioware website want them to change the ending)?

I haven’t played through the game because I’m too attached to those characters and I don’t want to have to say goodbye, as lame as that is. But I have thoroughly spoilered myself, and yeah the ending seems like it was pretty misguided.

The ME fan in me is happy they’re going to try and make it better, but the author in me is deeply suspicious of creative people caving in to their fans’ demands. It’s a complex issue!

I’d prefer that you didn’t, tattoos of my stuff rarely turn out very well. But if your heart’s set on it and it’ll make you happy, go for it. It’s your body.

I can’t remember, but I think this current arc is the first time you see Hannelore’s father. It’s pretty great how you designed his facial features to resemble that of Hannelore. Was this intentional? Is it difficult to make a character look similar enough to their relatives to make them LOOK related, but at the same time different enough to distinguish them as a separate individuals?

It was intentional, but it’s also partly due to the fact that I have a hard time drawing visually distinctive characters. I always err on the side of subtlety and the little differences get lost in my overall style. Still, I’ve made progress over the years and it’s something I will continue to work on.

What do you look for in a good tattoo parlor? I’m seriously considering getting my first tattoo (my own design), but I have absolutely no clue about how to go about choosing a good tattoo parlor… advice?

Check out their work online, look up reviews, talk to the staff. If it skeeves you out or otherwise makes you uncomfortable, look elsewhere. It’s important to have a good relationship with your artist as they’re carving things into your flesh that will be there for the rest of your life!

Following on from the “a third of my life” thing in the most recent Q&A, just realized, wow—there’s probably heaps of people who’ve grown up on QC like I have. (As a bi/poly woman with PTSD, your female characters were really helpful in making me not feel like I was a total alien or something.) Is that more scary or awesome, that amount of input into people? Did you ever think you’d be helping people that way?

It’s not something I ever considered when I was starting out, and it’s always humbling to think about it.

So I just got snakebites.. I know you’ve had stuff in your lip too, so any advice on how I go about eating stuff? At the moment I tilt my head back at gurgle things down, but it is rather uncomfortable.

Haha, you’ll get used to it as they heal. Sandwiches will remain somewhat challenging.

Hey Jeph! Long-time reader, first-time nuisance. You seem to be pretty accepting of the GLBTetc portion of the population, and so I was just wondering: are we ever going to see a trans* guy/gal/other in the comic?

I would really like to have a trans character in the comic. But it’s a very tricky kind of character to write, and the last thing I want to do is portray it in an insensitive manner. Basically I just need to do a shit-ton of research.

What kind of character do you play in D&D?

I’ve played a bunch of different classes. My character in the main campaign I’m playing in is a dragonborn paladin. I really like rogues too, if/when I get into another campaign I’m definitely running a rogue.

Whats the Standard of living like in Massachusetts? Good place to live? I’m considering a job in Massachusetts and wanted to know what its like there from a local’s standpoint.

If you’ve got work, it’s a great place to live. Super liberal, close to fun big cities, really pretty in parts.

Having seen the discussion on the forum about an “animated” QC, I wonder - do you hear voices for your characters as you write their dialogue? Say, Marten has a type of voice, or Faye, or Pintsize… And if so, have those voices changed over the run of the comic as your drawing style has changed?

Not really.

when I was taking creative writing, we had a lecture on how to write well rounded characters, and part of it was filling out a survey as the character, even if some of those answers would never come up. You have well rounded characters in my opinion, have you done anything like that?

It’s not something I’ve done, but it sounds like a good creative exercise. I just try to do a good job? As nonspecific as that sounds.

do you make a noticeable revenue from your music? By the way I know I’ve said it before, but your doing a kick ass job with it.

I couldn’t make a living off it or anything, but it has paid for some nice gear.

Hey Jeph, this not a question but… Thank you for consistently not being an asshole. As a woman who reads webcomics, I will sometimes have to stop reading series because of the way the author treats female protagonists (or antagonists, or women in general…) You, on the other hand, have recently handled tough issues like relationship drama and sexual harassment with maturity and compassion. So yeah, thanks for that :)

Hanners’ mom is also a tallish lady. Does Hanners take after her solely, or has she also benefitted from spending most of her childhood in microgravity? Granted, the station’s centripetal force would counter most of this, but she’s clearly spent enough time weightless to become comfortable with moving and having all her internal organs ho floaty.

I think most of it’s genetics. She’s just tall!

How do you go about drum tracking for Deathmole? Which software do you use? I’m really struggling to get to grips with making loops for my own music, I’d be interested to hear how you learned!

I do everything in Logic Pro using a MIDI keyboard. It’s about as simple a setup as you can get.

Your convention schedule says you are going to be attending the Toronto Comic Arts Festival on May 5 and 6, but when I go to the TCAF website, you are not listed on the ‘Who’s Coming?’ page. Are you indeed coming to this event? I live in the Toronto area, and would love to come say hi and get my QC book signed.

Yes.

Did you have trouble teaching Shelby to walk? I have a medium sized Labrador/terrier mix but she pulls really hard when I walk her, harness or not.

Pyrs are super independent so we’ve given up hope on her ever being a good heeler. But she doesn’t pull too much, she has learned it is more comfortable to stay within the leash’s range.

Have you ever considered the limits of how far can you push some aspects of the QC universe without “jumping the shark”? Being a fantasy world, you’ve developed it pretty nicely all these years, and I guess you can expand a lot without spoiling it. Have you ever had an idea and then shelved it because it “went too far”?

I reuse backgrounds wherever it’s convenient because it saves time, and I will look up reference photos for other things.

So, I’ve recently moved to Savannah, and I was wondering if you have alot of past experience in Savannah to draw from when making Faye? The fact her name is Whitaker (which I drive on every other day), all of the trees she very easily could drive toward… I’m just wondering 1) what is your relationship is to Savannah, and 2) do you think Faye would’ve been going to Savannah College of Art and Design before that whole dad thing happened? (I go to SCAD now, lol)

I’ve never been, but I hear it’s nice! I dunno where she was going to school, I’ll decide if/when it becomes pertinent to the story.

I wasn’t able to take my antidepressant a couple of nights ago, and I’m feeling it hardcore today. Nothing really seems to be able to cheer me up because it’s not “I have depression” depression but “My medication isn’t working because I didn’t take it” depression. I’m just really lethargic, and I thought going out would help, but it didn’t. What are the kinds of things you do on days when nothing seems to work?

Tough it out, things will get better. Sometimes you just gotta let a shitty day be a shitty day and move on.

I know your art is somewhat like Azumanga Daioh,and I’ve seen manga references in QC,so do you actually read manga or watch anime?

I want to get my upper ear pierced (like where the bottom half of an industrial would go) but I can’t stand being non-balanced and most people I know say that i wouldn’t be able to sleep if I pierce both ears at the same time. Any advice for the obsessive-tendencied?

I had cartilage punches in both ears at the same time and it sucked. If you’re a side sleeper, I recommend getting them done one at a time. You’re not asymmetrical, you’re under construction.

Hey Jeph, how did you start out approaching story arcs? I have a fledgling webcomic that’s a single panel, usually an anecdote of some sort, but I’d like to do an actual story — how did you approach writing your first few arcs? How far in advance did you plan? Did you have whole stories down, or just characters, or just a basic idea? I don’t want to start a story that I don’t have a desire to write, but I’m having a hard time figuring out how to approach it. Thanks.

I just let them evolve naturally. I’m not good at outlining an entire story and then doing it, I prefer to just make it up as I go along. Frequently I’ll have an end point I want to get to, and the story evolves naturally as a means of getting to that end point. In this current arc, for instance, I knew they’d go to the space station, and I had a few general plot points I wanted to do, but the process of actually setting up and reaching those plot points was all done by the seat of my pants.

I just realised I’ve been reading QC for seven years. That equates to a third of my life. How crazy is that?
